1.We usually use imperatives in many different situations:

 

a. give directions and instructions

  • Turn right at the light.
  • Go straight for two blocks.
  • Repeat ten times in each position.

 

b. give orders or commands

  • Stand up!
  • Don't leave!
  • Stop talking!

 

 c. make an informal invitation

  • Come visit me.
  • Study with us this morning.
  • Have a piece of this pie. It's awesome.

 

d. give advice or make suggestions

  • Talk to your mother about it.
  • Always take your umbrella with you.
  • Don't exercise when you feel very tired.

 

e. ask favors

  • Please read the text.
  • Read the text, please.

 

f. give warnings

  • Don't skip!
  • Be careful!
  • Keep away!

 

2. The imperative form is the same in both the singular and the plural.

  • Mike, close your eyes.
  • Mike and Cindy, close your eyes.
